  Fruiting Tree in Malaysian Forest

Family:-  MALVACEAE [ex-STERCULIACEAE]

Species :- Commersonia bartramia

Local names:- "Cherry Tree"

 

 

Flowers are small, white along the entire length of branches.

Fruit is a pinkish brown. When ripen could turns dark red. Normally eaten when fruits are almost ripen in light green colors. About 10.0- mm in diameter. Non-fleshy, simple, dehiscent, capsule contain a collection of seeds

  This plant is a non-timber species. Small sub-canopy tree -up to 25 m high.Bole is cylindrical and could be straight for a few meters. Bark grey and brown. There are about nine species: tropical Asia, Australia; one species in China.  This is  not a "cherry" tree as we in Malaysia refers to. In reality Cherry is a fleshy fruit  that contains a single stony seed. The real cherry belongs to the family Rosaceae, genus Prunus.
