Acacia
mangium is a perennial tree native to
Australia and Asia. There are several name given
to this popular tree , such as Black Wattle,
Hickory Wattle and Mangium. Its uses include
environmental management and wood. This tree
like most Acasia grows up to 30m tall, often
with a relatively straight trunk. Regarded first
as a rather productive timber tree, secondly for
firewood (specific gravity = 0.65).
The hard,
light-brown wood is dense, with narrow sapwood
and a straight, close grain. It makes excellent
particle board and could possibly be useful for
furniture such as cabinetmaking. When first
selected as plant for reforestation program in
Malaysia, the wood produced would be destined
for a pulp factory in East Malaysia. Other good
points about the plant is that sapling can be
easily sown. A good a rapid solution for land to
be reforested, as the tree appears quite
promising for erosion control.
